something unexpected

I found a little rodent huddling on the concrete by the steps of the price center when I went to lunch. I thought it was dead at first, but it moved a little when I prodded it with the edge of my newspaper. I don't even know what it was (too big to be a mouse, looked kind of like a large naked-tailed gerbil. no, not a rat.) Probably a sick wild animal. I realize you're not supposed to touch sick wild animals but I didn't want to just leave it there on the steps with people walking by who might harrass it or step on it or something, so I scooped it up in my newspaper and put it in the bushes or weeds or whatever the plant matter over there is.
