I'm so tired my head hurts. I was not meant to get up at 6:30 in the morning. Despite having received its usual breakfast, my stomach is growling. It probably slept through the meal.

I did a little last-minute shopping yesterday. Among the things I picked up was a pair of clippers so I could chop down the tall spindly branch at the top of the Christmas tree so the star didn't look ridiculously out of place. On my way to the garden clipper section I passed the AISLE OF DEATH -- every poison for weeds, insects and rodents known to man. All this killing, especially of mammals, makes me queasy. I know rats can be pests, but they're incredibly intelligent for rodents and making them internally hemorrhage seems unnecessarily cruel. There was a product called, I swear, SLUG AND SNAIL DEATH.

I like Home Depot, though; it's not like they're completely devoted to death. I bought a few pansies there last week. Pansies in December, how bizarre. They're doing fine but thus far I've left them in their little six-pack of dirt. I think the soil in my window boxes, from which I periodically rip out dead plants, is tired and lacking in nutrients. Hey, I think I have some miracle gro somewhere. Maybe that will perk things up.
