Apparently this is Yet Another Milwaukee thing... St. Nick's Day. When I was a kid, every December 6th we'd wake up to stockings hung on the inside of the back door. They were stuffed with fruit and chocolates and little toys. There were more things hidden around the living room -- a stuffed animal under a cushion, a toy behind the couch. It was like pre-Christmas. My mom still sends me (and Ken, who had never heard of such a thing) stuffed stockings and a handful of gifts for the holiday. Part of me thinks it would be more sensible for her not to mail heavy fruit that we can buy here, but the smell of apples and chocolate in a stocking makes me feel like I'm six years old again.
