There's an article in this week's Chronicle of Higher Education about a guy (Roger W. Babson) who devoted his life to the study of antigravity and donated money to colleges to do research on it. The colleges also got big stone monuments that say they are "to remind students of the blessings forthcoming when science determines what gravity is, how it works, and how it may be controlled." (Actually, the original wording was "the blessings forthcoming when a semi-insulator is discovered in order to harness gravity as a free power and reduce airplane accidents," which is... a little weird.) The article goes on to say:

Tufts University awards cosmology doctorates in front of its monument. Graduates kneel before it, and a cosmology professor drops an apple on their heads, a symbolic gesture of the unwavering force Babson believed humans would overcome.
