Apr. 1st, 2019 05:10 pmOn Friday, Ken and I had off work for Cesar Chavez day, so we went to Anza-Borrego to see the desert wildflowers. It wasn't a SUPERBLOOM(tm) like 2017, but it was still very pretty, and it wasn't ridiculously crowded like it was in 2017.

On Saturday, back in San Diego, we went out for breakfast near Old Town. I happened to comment that I'd heard there were flowers on nearby Fiesta Island. "Want to go there?" Ken asked. I did.
There were indeed many flowers. They may be weeds -- Fiesta Island, a man-made island in Mission Bay, is not exactly pristine habitat. Still. Lots of flowers. ("Smells like allergies," Ken said, inhaling deeply. I gave him a Zyrtec.)

There were also lots of dogs, because a large chunk of the island is an off-leash park.

We hiked around a bit, and found a tricky geocache, and had fun.

"Where else do we know that's ever had flowers?" Ken asked afterward. "They're probably good this year." So we stopped by the river park behind the YMCA to see the nasturtiums (which are definitely weeds, but I love nasturtiums, so I am CONFLICTED). Either they don't love these conditions as much as the other flowers, or it's just too early in the year; they weren't as spectacular as they were on our anniversary a couple of years ago. We might check back in a couple of weeks.

What I really want is to see the orange hillsides of California poppies around Lake Elsinore, but the crowds are reportedly terrible and the city just wants everyone to go away, so I feel rather discouraged. (But I really want to see them!) Well, if they're still blooming next weekend, maybe we'll see.
