Today's apple is Opal. Opal apple: it's fun to say. "These sunny fruits are like none other — with a beautiful appearance, distinctively crunchy texture, floral aroma and a sweet, tangy flavor."

Opal

The sticker just saying "SWEET" doesn't fill me with confidence, but we'll see.

Adam's Apples says: "Unbroken, Opal has a strong aroma of cider and honey and a whiff of spice. Her calyx is only half closed." (Is he oblivious to how much this sounds like innuendo, or am I just twelve?) "Each bite starts light and sweet with a hint of watermelon candy ... and settles down to something suggestive of Golden Delicious, with hints of honey, vanilla, and spice."

Verdict: I'm not detecting watermelon candy (which is a pity, because I'd be into that), but this is a relatively lively apple, with a nice tanginess. I was prepared to resent it for not being Aurora, the other yellow apple I liked recently, but it turns out I don't have to. It doesn't seem to bruise nearly as easily as Aurora, either. The tanginess reminds me of a toned-down Granny Smith, which I consider a good thing (sorry I can't talk about vanilla and spice, but I have only my untutored taste buds to work with). That might mean that it's too acidic for me to eat all the time, though.

Buy again? Yes. Upon reflection, the aftertaste is actually getting a little too Granny Smith for me, but I'd enjoy one now and then.
